December 10th 2011 and January 19th 2012 (Phase I & II respectively), USIGT, in conjunction with D5 Enterprises, retrofitted the existing Metal Halide (MH) parking lot site lighting fixtures for Lance-Kashian & Company at the Park View Plaza Building in Fresno, CA with Ultra Constant Discharge (UCD Xenon) bulbs/ballasts. Phase I & II consisted of retrofitting 65 250 Watt MH KIM AR type fixtures with 120 Watt Xenon configurations. After consulting with the owner, Ed Kashian, the goal of the project was to provide as much light as possible and maximize energy savings. Mr. Kashian selected UCD Xenon as the preferred technology over LED due to light output, performance, energy savings and a substantially lower project cost. Retrofit time per fixture was less than one hour per fixture with standard hand tools and can be performed by any electrician or maintenance personnel. A ladder truck was needed for the parking lot fixtures that are mounted +/- 16’ above finish grade. Circuits were reconfigured from 480 volt to 277 volt.
The original lighting load was 55.84kW. This retrofit project reduced the load to 25.55kW, which is a 54.24% decrease in power required for the building parking lot and site lighting. The environmental impact of this retrofit was the equivalent of removing 3.6 cars from US roadways and an estimated carbon footprint reduction of 20.3 tons. Foot-candle measurements dramatically increased after the retrofit was completed. The benefits of retrofitting with UCD Xenon are reusing the existing fixture housing and the existing reflector so the fixture optics remain unchanged. This eliminates unnecessary waste to landfills. The high efficiency of UCD Xenon technology produces an increased ratio of lumens per watt (108 Lm/W) allowing for substantial reductions in wattage required per fixture.. The outstanding color rendering of UCD Xenon technology increases the effective light and more closely resembles actual daylight conditions.
